‘Village Fun Run Draws In Dozens Of Athletes

Sports buffs proved they were game for a laugh when nearly 200 people took part in Barlborough’s annual Fun Run. The event attracted dozens of athletes and fun-runners including one group dressed as clowns. John Shaw, chairman of Barlborough Parish Council, which helps organise the event, said: ‘It was fantastic with over 180 entries this year and we look forward to continuing with this popular community event.’

The run was started by Sgt Paul Smith, of Derbyshire Constabulary, who also presented trophies. George Finlay (9) became the youngest runner to win the overall competition since it was launched 10 years ago. Sara Bache (9) was the winner of the girls’ six to ten-year-old category, Thomas Lodge (11) was the winner of the boys’ 11 to 16 year-old category. Husband and wife team Russell and Fiona Cunliffe won the fastest male and female titles. Mr Shaw added: ‘As always the council is indebted to veteran marathon runner and organiser Maurice Jones without whose help the event would not run so smoothly.’
