A quick-thinking pensioner thwarted two burglars after they conned their way into her home. One of the offenders called at the 69 year-old woman’s property, on Royale Close, Eckington, about 12.15pm, on Wednesday, July 29, claiming to be a waterboard official and he was allowed inside. A police spokesman said: “The man claimed there were problems with the water supply and he was allowed inside to check taps in the kitchen. “But when the woman noticed he was wearing gloves she became suspicious and found another offender who had sneaked into her bedroom and she forced them both to flee empty-handed.”

The bogus waterboard official was described as white, aged 30, of medium build, 5ft 10ins tall, wearing a grey cap, gloves and a red-striped top and jeans. His accomplice was described as white, aged 30, of large-build, with short, brown hair and was wearing a grey t-shirt and jeans. Derbyshire Constabulary has urged residents to check the identity of callers and if they have any doubts to refuse them entry. Witnesses or anyone with information should call Derbyshire Constabulary on 0345 123 3333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. ‘
