You now only have to provide details about a birth or death once instead of having to repeat the same information to every council and Government service.
Derbyshire councils have teamed up with the Department of Work and Pensions to launch the county’s new ‘Tell Us Once’ service which will be offered to anyone making an appointment to register a birth or death.
The registrar will collect all the details needed to inform relevant agencies on your family’s behalf so you don’t have to contact each organisation individually yourselves.
Tell Us Once can help benefit entitlements get sorted out more quickly, prevent a bereaved family continuing to receive mail for a deceased relative and avoid the need for copies of birth or death certificates to be posted off to different organisations.
Our Cabinet Member for Public Health Councillor Carol Hart said:
“Dealing with a birth or death is one of the most important things a family has to face and particularly when a loved one dies, the last thing relatives want to do is make dozens of phone calls to update their records.”Until now relatives had to contact each organisation separately but Tell Us Once will do that for them. It’s a service Derbyshire councils were keen to provide to make life easier for residents at what can be one of the busiest or most difficult times in their lives.”
Tell Us Once will pass on relevant information to the Department for Work and Pensions, HM Revenue and Customs (for tax, credits and benefits), the Identity and Passport Service and housing and council tax benefit offices.
Other relevant services can also be informed on request including electoral services, libraries, children’s services, Blue Badge parking scheme and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency.
Organisations who are contacted will use the information to update records, start or amend benefits as appropriate and resolve any outstanding issues.
We’re working in partnership to deliver Tell Us Once with Derby City Council, Amber Valley Borough, Bolsover District, Chesterfield Borough, Derbyshire Dales District, Erewash Borough, High Peak Borough, North East Derbyshire and South Derbyshire District Councils.
